CULINARY COMFORTS IN NEW ROCHELLE

MARIA RESTAURANT

Boasting a rustic and sleek interior, this signora makes a pretty perch for drinking and dining. Midnight-blue leather banquettes, chandeliers and exposed brick adorn the room; a long bar is populated by chatty locals and well-heeled visitors.While the kitchen sticks to beloved Italian classics, it also pivots seamlessly towards a more contemporary approach. Burrata, for instance, is first fried and then dressed to the nines with roasted pomodorini and pistachio. Linguine tossed with favas, peas and fennel pesto is a springtime treat, while monkfish with creamy bisque and soppressata is ideal at all times.
Desserts, like the dannolo, is a delicious hybrid of the classic cannoli filled with cream, chocolate chips and crowned by a tiny round of biscotti.

TOWNHOUSE

New Rochelle has stepped up its game with an enlivened dining scene and Town House is leading the charge. It's set within a three-floored historic building filled with unique touches including black-and-white mosaic-tiled flooring, comfortable booths and a wide bar. Chef Chris dos Reis delivers on the promise of American brasserie food with starters such as charred squid over a sunchoke-squid ink puree. An upcharge for the house made sourdough is worth every penny to sop up the delicious sauce. Elsewhere, pan con tomate is tired and ho-hum, but here it's impressively crisp, fluffy and tangy. Other menu highlights include beef tartare with pommes allumettes; tempura green beans with kimchi and togarashi; and steak au poivre with Szechuan notes.

DUVBROVNIK

Nestled along New Rochelle's more commercial streets, Dubrovnik is a real find—with the added bonus of live Croatian music on certain nights. Diners come from near and far to feast on their myriad of items from the wood-burning oven. Equally appealing is the interior design. Next door to the owner’s cabinetry business, everything here is custom-made. Attention to detail isn’t just a hallmark of their décor though; the menu follows close at hand, offering the likes of a Dalmatian platter with artisanal charcuterie; and crni rižoto, tender cuttlefish risotto. Orata grilled over wood charcoal is simply perfect, but those palačinke (crêpes with peach jam) result in sweet dreams.
Even the wine list, starring Croatian and other varietals, bear the owner's stamp.

WAFFLE CAFE

From the décor to the tricked-out waffles, New Rochelle’s Waffle Café is the place to go for breakfast-inspired treats in Westchester. Among the more lavish menu items, the standout is the Chocolate Lover waffle, which has both cocoa powder and chocolate chips in the batter, and is served with dollops of whipped cream, crumbled chocolate candies, and a delicate drizzle of chocolate sauce. Slightly less restrained is the Reese’s Puffs French Toast, a peanut butter lover’s confection. Soaked in a cinnamon-maple-syrup batter, the dipped bread is coated in crushed Reese’s Puffs before griddling, then finished with peanut-butter drizzle, Reese’s Pieces, and more Reese’s Puffs. Sandwiches, like the vodka parm (crispy chicken cutlet, vodka sauce, and mozzarella), are served on five-cheese waffle bread, while chicken and waffles can be served traditionally or with twists like red velvet or funfetti waffles. It is the perfect spot for a quick sweet or savory meal.
